Traditional Vs Contemporary: Gifts For Milestone Occasions

Every birthday, anniversary, and holiday is a cause for celebration, but truly special occasions only occur every once in a while. Silver wedding anniversaries, christenings, graduations, and twenty-first birthdays are big milestones in everyone’s life and they deserve to be honored in a special way. As these milestones have been celebrated for at least 100 years, there are traditional gifts associated with the occasion that can still make wonderful presents. However, depending on your budget, or what you think the recipient will appreciate more, there are contemporary gifts that still celebrate the event.

Christening

The phrase “born with a silver spoon in his mouth” comes from the tradition of gifting silver spoons on a Christening day. In the sixteenth century, any child receiving such a Christening gift would have to come from a wealthy background and were also blessed with a bit of luck. By the mid nineteenth century the Christening gift of a spoon was common amongst the middle and upper classes.

Today, an appropriate christening gift would be a rattle, a soft toy for the baby to sleep with, or a soft, fleece blanket. Anything the parents can use to entertain and comfort their child is usually appreciated.

Wedding Anniversaries

Each wedding anniversary is traditionally associated with a theme, and the gifts exchanged are usually in line with the theme. The theme for the first year is paper, the fifth is wood, the tenth is tin, and the twenty-fifth is silver. Couple can give gifts with the theme in mind, but contemporary gifts have taken the form of holidays, dinners out, or hosting a party for the big milestones such as ten year, twenty-five year, or even fifty year anniversary.

Graduation

The graduation ceremony dates back to the twelfth century, and has traditionally been marked with by wearing caps and gowns, with class rings making an appearance in the early 1900s. There are no official gifts to present to the graduate, but recently proud parents have rewarded their child’s hard work with holidays, cars, or expensive watches. However, you don’t have to buy them anything costly. Grateful graduates will be happy to receive any of these gifts, or just a free drink once the ceremony is over.

Recently, young children have been getting a taste of the graduation excitement with their own kindergarten graduation ceremonies. They also deserve some recognition, so find them some unique presents to mark the occasion. It’ll be years before they have another one.

Coming Of Age

The official age of adulthood varies between countries, but usually it coincides with the day they can legally drink. As a result, traditional gifts are related to alcohol, which can including buying them their first drink, or presenting them with various drinking paraphernalia. However, you could get creative and find them something they will still enjoy the next morning. Help them buy new furniture for the apartment, buy them new gadget that will help them sort out their busy schedule, or organize a group experience they will never forget.

How to Celebrate with Style

Life is for living. Landmark occasions should therefore be celebrated with style, bringing together our nearest and dearest to share in an event, whether that be a milestone birthday, wedding day or special anniversary. If you are planning an upcoming party, here’s how you and your guests can celebrate with style…

Pick the Perfect Venue

You will want to remember an event for all the right reasons, which means choosing the perfect venue. It goes without saying you will want your destination to stand out from the crowd, so do your homework to discover a space that will take your guests breath away, such as At the P, a rooftop venue in Los Angeles that offers three beautiful event spaces, combined with live theatre and restaurants. Whether you are planning your dream wedding day or landmark birthday, this is your day to simply embrace a momentous moment in your life – so create an event that will impress your guests.

A Sophisticated Theme

Every party should incorporate a theme. That doesn’t mean you must opt for a sci-fi wedding or a Disney birthday party; you can aim to offer the classic style of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or simply select a luxurious colour theme throughout your venue, décor, favours and invitations.

The Invitations

Once you have booked the venue and chosen your theme, it is time to think about the invitations. Instead of opting for a standard enveloped invitation, why not personalise your invite to complement your party? For example, if you are creating an Alice in Wonderland

themed party, you could incorporate the invitation in a mystery box, filled with a magical (alcoholic) potion, teacup and a Queen of Hearts card. The attention to detail will prove to your guests that they are in for a great night – so they will be excited to attend.

Exquisite Dining

Nothing quite screams luxurious like delicious, sophisticated food. Forget fish and chip cones or mini sausage rolls, we are talking about exquisite dining experiences, where people can sit together to enjoy delightful dishes from talented chefs, before toasting to your wedding nuptials, birthday, engagement or anniversary.

The Drinks Selection Whether you want to welcome guests with buck’s fizz, champagne or unique cocktails, ensure you have enough for every guest. It’s also important to remember that different people will have different tastes, so ensure no-one is disappointed by the drink selection on offer and select a venue that provides a full bar. Your guests will be glad you did.

Exceptional Entertainment

After the food and drinks comes the entertainment, so ensure your event stands out in the minds of your guests by having them dancing on their feet or laughing in their seats. From a talented wedding singer to a top-notch comedian, there are so many options for you to choose from when it comes to live entertainment. You can book a dance act to take to the stage as your guests dine in style, or hire a magician who will wow your loved ones.
