The tongues are covered in lots of tiny bristles, which help them to comb out dirt and loose fur from their coats – much like the hairbrushes that we use. … You can help to reduce the amount of fur they shed, and therefore minimise fur balls, by helping your cat with their grooming with a gentle brush.
Some cats love to be brushed, and some don’t. Starting at a young age can help a cat get used to being brushed. Even if your older cat doesn’t like to be brushed, it’s still good to try and get them used to being brushed for hygienic benefits.
It comes as no surprise to anyone that grooming your cat has hygienic benefits. It helps eliminate parasites, keep the cat’s coat clean and smooth, reduces hairballs, and stimulate glands attached to hair roots that secrete substances to keep hair water-proofed.
