How to Help Your Child Land a College Athletic Scholarship

Reviews · April 9, 2020

If your son or daughter is approaching that time in life when college is just on the horizon, there are no doubt countless questions running through your mind. How do you help them pick the right school? What will the application process be like? How are you going to fund their degree?

All these questions and more are sure sources of stress for you and your child. If your son or daughter is hoping to land a spot on an athletic team at their university of choice, things can get a lot more complicated very quickly.

While there are a number of athletic scholarships available to students looking to attend college in the United States, earning one isn’t an easy task. Here are a few things that you should know as you begin this long and complex process.

Minimum Requirements

If your child is hoping to land an athletic scholarship to attend either a Division 1 or Division 2 school, he or she must meet the minimum requirements set out by the NCAA. In addition to being on track to have the right course work completed before entering college, those students who wish to qualify for a scholarship need to demonstrate a higher level of academic achievement.

It is important to know that there is no blanket GPA or SAT score that your child needs to beat in order to earn an athletic scholarship, since each institution has different standards. That being said, the main goal should be for your child to be able to demonstrate that their academics are a top priority. College coaches are meant to keep standards high when it comes to the academic performance of their athletes.

If you do wish to have a specific target for your child to aim for, then you need to reach out to an athletic academic advisor or college coach from the university that he or she wants to play for.

Eligibility

The NCAA has a system called the Eligibility Center (formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse) that is designed to verify and track a student athlete’s eligibility to participate in university athletics. Only true amateurs are allowed to play sports for a college team.

There are a number of things that might impact your child’s amateur status. If he or she has ever received money or payment of any kind as compensation for sporting events or for participating on a team, then the NCAA would regard them as a professional athlete. Furthermore, if they have endorsed or promoted a product, then they must also forfeit their amateur status.

With so many rules in place and requirements that must be met, it can be difficult to successfully see your child earn their place on a college sports team. If you still feel in the dark about all that needs to be done, asmscholarships.com is a great resource for students and parents looking to take their best shot at landing a college athletic scholarship.

How To Manage Common Cold in Children

Reviews · May 31, 2018

The cold season, which has thankfully gone by but which will surely return, sees a lot of children catch colds. While everyone can catch a cold at any time regardless of the season, children are more prone to it because they have an immune system that is not fully developed.

The common cold is more frequent during the cold season because the rhinovirus which causes colds becomes more active in freezing temperatures and hibernates in warm weather. As you can see, colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria, just like Zika And Flu.

While you can’t treat it, there are ways you can manage it to make your children a little bit more comfortable as you wait to go away on its own.

Hot shower

The steam from a hot shower can help decongest your child’s blocked nose naturally. Make sure the temperatures are not scalding hot when you put them under the shower.

The steam will liquefy the mucus blocking their noses to enable them breath with less difficulty. For toddlers, build the steam in the shower before letting them in and then giving them a warm bath.

Never allow your children, even the older ones, to have a cold shower when they are suffering from a cold. It aggravates the symptoms and takes them longer to recover.

Rest

Rest is important to prevent the spread of the virus to other people as well as hasten the recovery process.

The body is able to fight the virus better when physical exertion is minimized. Your child needs to rest when they are suffering from a cold so do not force them to go to school or help around with household chores. If need be, give them a bed rest with a few minutes basking in the sun daily to boost their body’s immunity.

Plenty of fluids

Give your children plenty of fluids especially warm beverages and soups when they are under a cold. This helps them stay hydrated as well as providing them with the energy they need to fight off the virus.

Furthermore, warm beverages with drops of honey soothes the sore throat that often accompanies a cold and also helps with nasal decongestion.

Do not give antibiotics

As a good parent you always want to ease the suffering of your children but giving them antibiotics when they have a cold does them more than good. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections but colds are viral infections so it is ineffective.

The problem with using antibiotics incorrectly is that the body builds up a resistance to the drug so that when a bacterial infection strikes, it can’t treat it and you have to resort to stronger alternatives.

The best you can then do is give the painkillers under the prescription of a doctor to help lower their fevers.

Prevention

The virus is passed on when you touch any object touched by someone suffering from a cold or through inhalation. So encourage your kids to wash their hands before eating and keeping them away from their peers when they have a cold to prevent them from spreading it to others.

Great Ideas to Jazz up Your Child’s Bedroom

Reviews · February 5, 2018

If there is one thing that doesn’t remain a constant, it’s your child’s bedroom. Not only do they have different toys every year, but their tastes change so you always have to repaint it with the next big interest. However, what can you do that will be great for your child’s bedroom and doesn’t mean changing the color of the walls every year? Here are some ideas for your kid’s bedroom that you can easily change.

Repaint the Walls

Although the idea is that you don’t want to be constantly redesigning the walls, you will need to make them a blank canvas for your ideas. Try to repaint them in a neutral color so that it doesn’t clash with anything you will be putting in the room. You also don’t want them associating a color with a particular theme. Something calming like a cream or soft beige might sound dull, but it will make a nice contrast to the rest of the room.

Change the Bed

If the room currently has a standard single bed in there, then although this is ok, you want something that will serve many purposes. You want a bed that can also be a sofa, a place to lounge on to watch movies, and a place to play. One idea if you have space is to replace it with a double bed, this will give your child more room to lay and sleep, and it can also cater for friends that want to sit down as well. Another idea is a high bed that has a desk underneath. It is an ideal choice for a small room as it creates additional space, it is also good for the older child that needs to study more.

Theme the Furniture

If your child is still into having a themed bedroom, then instead of having characters in the walls, place them on the furniture. For example, if they love pirates, then put stickers of pirates and ships on the desk and the other furniture, you can also add some rope and other sailing accessories without having to have anything permanent. You can also get themed curtains and bedclothes that can easily be taken down when they have grown out of it.

Personalized Accessories

As well as adding themes to the furniture, you can also add other accessories. One idea is to create a calendar using a company such as calendarcraze.com and add photos of your child’s current favorite celebrities and heroes. Because it only lasts for one year, you can change the photos every year to keep it up to date. You can also get mugs and mouse mats with their favorite characters and change them as they get older. They will also enjoy the process of picking out the characters to use in the accessories.

By making the room more adaptable, you can save not only time but also money on wallpaper and wall stickers. It also makes repainting easier as you can use the same or similar colors again.
