How To Get Your Home Spring Ready

Reviews · February 20, 2018

Spring is often one of the most loved and longed-for seasons. It’s the season where the world begins to wake up from its hibernation, flowers, and plants burst back into color and everywhere nature is blooming. After a long, cold winter, almost everyone welcomes the warmer months, and we often find ourselves full of the joys of spring. Below are four ways to get your home ready for the new season.

Refresh Your Linens

In the depths of winter, it’s comforting for us to snuggle under thick duvets with plush, dark covers. However, now the days are becoming warmer, it’s time to retire the winter linens and the heavy duvet to the cabinet and welcome back a lighter comforter, adorned with bright colors. You should also switch your bed sheets to breathable cotton which will keep you cooler as the nights warm up.

Spring Clean

We are all familiar with the term ‘Spring Clean,’ and there’s no better time to prepare your house for a brand-new season than by having a thorough clean of all the rooms in your home. During the dark winter months, it may be difficult to motivate ourselves to tackle the tricky cleaning jobs, such as washing your windows and cleaning your kitchen cabinets. However, performing a thorough spring clean will leave you feeling energized and ready for the upcoming months. You could also clean your interior carpets and any wooden floors which may have seen extra wear during the wet, cold winter. Why not create a schedule for each deep cleaning job and tick them off day-by-day?

Not only does ‘spring clean’ refer to your home interiors, but you should also undertake any pressing maintenance jobs. It’s possible that during the winter months you didn’t use your air conditioning. Therefore, you should ensure you have checked the unit, ready for the new season. If you do find you need air conditioner repair, you can search online and find specialized companies which will often even visit your home on the same day.

Welcome Plants Inside

What better time to bring beautiful colorful flowers inside than spring? Adding flowers to your décor will not only bring some freshness into your home and a new burst of color, but they will also help purify the air. There are a variety of flowers which you can grow inside, including the beautiful Peace Lily which is easy to care for and grows white flowers. You could also choose to grow Jasmine inside, which will bloom pink and white flowers and fill your home with an inviting and soothing fragrance.

Rearrange Furniture

During winter, you may have rearranged your furniture to accommodate the Christmas tree or to move closer to the warmth of your heating system. Therefore, when spring comes around, it’s time to rearrange your furniture. It’s the perfect time to open up your windows to allow as much natural light to filter inside as you can. If you have previously had a chair or sofa in front of your windows, consider moving them to a different part of the room and keeping the curtains open. You could even opt for lighter, brighter curtains to really make use of the window area.

How to get your garden ready for Spring 2018

Reviews · January 16, 2018

As we begin life in 2018, a lot of us are now ready for the cold weather to disappear and are waiting patiently for the warm weather to grace us with its presence. However, before the sun begins shining brightly again, we need to get our garden’s ready for the numerous BBQ’s and garden parties. It’s time to give our garden some well-deserved TLC.

Clean Up

Throughout the winter season, a lot of us leave our gardens exposed to the elements. The strong winds, storms and heavy down pours leave our gardens’ in tatters. You may even find your shed has been damaged and a few windows have been broken.

The task in hand may seem too tough to tackle, however, after a bit of a clear up, your garden will start to take shape in no time. It’s important to start your chores quickly as possible. The sooner you start to clean up, the better your garden will look.

Get Your Shed Ready

After many months of not being used, it’s time to tidy up the shed and replace any broken windows with Simply Plastics Shed Windows. These windows can ensure the next time a football goes flying towards the shed, the shed windows won’t smash. Now that spring is fast approaching, you will most probably be in and out of the shed a lot more so make sure the shed doesn’t get left out when giving your garden some much needed TLC.

Prepare Your Garden Tools

Those tools that you haven’t used since last summer, it’s time to make sure they are ready for the job in hand. You may find some have gone rusty and others are really dirty. If so, make sure you replace the ones that are no longer survived the test of time, and clean the ones that are still dirty from last summer/ autumn.

Pull Those Weeds

Over the winter period, you’ll be able to notice a huge build-up of weeds. Don’t wait any longer to get them out. Take some time out of your week to spend a little bit of time eliminating the weeds. This will definitely help prepare your garden for spring.

Get the Soil Ready

Make sure the soil in your garden is ready for planting. Start to turn the soil with a pitchfork and then add some fresh compost to your soil. This will add nutrients to the soil and ensure the flowers you look to plant are healthy.

Prune Shrubs

January is the perfect time to get your shrubs and trees in tip top shape. Make sure the tools you use are sharpened to ensure your plants stay healthy. Pruning gives your shrubs a better shape, encourages flowers to sprout and can increase fruit to grow on your trees.

Maintain Your Garden

Lastly, be sure to maintain your garden. Create a plan and make sure you stick to it. Gardening may be a lot of hard work and maintaining the garden you’ve worked so hard to create may be hard, but make sure you do it! The more you work on your garden, the better it will look and the more you can enjoy spending time in your garden with your friends and family!

Spring projects to start planning now

Reviews · December 20, 2017

No sooner is the festive season behind us than thoughts turn to spring. Perhaps it is the slightly depressing sight of the home minus its Christmas decorations, or maybe it is the optimistic feeling that winter will soon be behind us, but most of us get that itchy feeling that we need a good project that will add functionality, beauty or value to the home – and hopefully all three.

So dust off your overalls and get your credit card at the ready – it’s time to visit mysafetysign.com and put up some “construction work underway” signs, because Spring is definitely in the air! Here are some ideas to get your creative juices running.

Rewire the electrics

If you own an older property, the chances are, you struggle to find enough power outlets for everyday needs in the modern technological world. These days, everything needs to be either plugged in constantly, or at least recharged with alarming regularity, and many homes are a mess of trailing sockets and extension cables.

These are a far from ideal solution, and can overload your system, presenting a fire risk as well as a trip hazard. A thorough rewire will make your home safer, and provide amazing convenience. These days, you can get socket outlets installed that also have USB fittings, making it easy to charge phones, tablets and the like.

While you are about it, get the consumer unit checked, and if it’s not up to snuff, replace it. This is an area where you really can’t cut corners, and at any rate, it is a good investment that will add to the value of your home if you decide to sell.

Add a conservatory

A conservatory makes a wonderful space to relax and enjoy the spring sunshine, even if the temperature is still low. It’s also a perfect place for entertaining guests all the year round – modern conservatories are far better insulated and more energy efficient than they used to be. Chances are, once it’s built, you will spend more time in there than in the family room!

Resurface the driveway

The freezing winter months take their toll on an asphalt drive, as does everyday wear and tear. Being the first thing that visitors see, a poorly maintained drive really lets the whole appearance of your home down. If yours is looking a little down at heel, spring is the perfect time to do it, as ideally, it needs moisture and warm, but not hot, temperatures, so look to get it booked now.

Incorporate some fresh colors

Over Christmas and new year, it was all about those snug, warm colors – deep reds, oranges and greens, for example. When you venture to the DIY store, get in some spring shades while you are in the paint aisle, ready to welcome in the new season. Pastels such as pale blues and yellows give the feeling of days out by the ocean, and remind us that those longer, warmer days will be back with us soon!
