3 Things You Should Do When You Bring Your New Dog Home

Reviews · February 14, 2020

Adopting a new dog is such an exciting time! That being said, bringing your new pup home is only the first step on the road to helping him or her acclimate to their new life. It can be an overwhelming adjustment for some dogs, particularly if the one you have adopted is a rescue.

In order to make the transition as smooth as possible, here are three things you should do so that your dog can get a happy and healthy start to his new life.

1. Prepare Your Dog’s New Home

Are you planning to crate train your dog, or will he sleep on a fluffy bed at the foot of yours? Do you have the right size water and food bowls for your dog’s breed? There are so many supplies that you’ll need to get ahead of time to make sure that your dog has everything he’ll need to settle in.

Start by making sure you have enough toys for your dog to play with so that there is no confusion about what things in your house are appropriate to chew on. Make sure that you also invest in a good leash for all of those walks that you’ll be taking together.

2. Take Your Dog to the Vet

Taking your new dog to the vet as soon as possible might sound a little far baby

fetched. After all, it is likely that he or she received any necessary medical care wherever they were being cared for before. That being said, it is important to have your pet registered with a veterinary office as soon as possible in case something unexpected comes up. Most veterinary offices want to do a physical checkup on new pets to make sure all is well.

Furthermore, you need to ensure that your dog has received any and all necessary vaccinations. If you have adopted a puppy, they might have not had all of the shots that they’ll need to ward off any harmful illnesses. Thankfully, there are plenty of experts, like those at easyvet Frisco, who will help guide.

3. Set Boundaries

It can be very tempting to let your adorable new housemate take over and do whatever he or she pleases around the house. Unfortunately, taking this attitude, especially with young dogs, can have some serious consequences.

It is important to establish right away that the dog is not the head of the household. If there are any areas in your house, such as a baby’s room, that you want your dog to stay out of, then you need to make that clear as soon as possible. If you don’t want your dog to make himself comfortable on the furniture, this is another boundary that must be established quickly.

Lastly, setting a firm schedule right away regarding food times and walks will go a long way in helping your new pet settle and help them find comfort in their new and loving home.

Unpicking Picky Pooches To Make Mealtimes Much Easier

Reviews · October 11, 2018

Every owner has to coax their dogs into eating now and again. Most four-legged fluffs go through periods where they don’t fancy food. Sometimes this can be due to illness. At other times, it’s because they know we’ve tried to hide pills in their meal. In the majority of cases, though, starvation doesn’t last long. One dog only has so much willpower, after all, and those kibbles look too damn tasty!

But, what happens if your dog never seems to get stuck into meals? In some cases, a dog can be picky by nature. Often, this is down to breed. As you can see from this yorkies care guide, yorkies are often fussy eaters. Bulldogs, golden retrievers, and others are also renowned for being picky with food. And, this can cause owners no end of strife.

For the most part, we deal with this by trying every food on the market until we find one our dog’s like. The trouble is, they then go off that if they have it too much. It’s a never ending problem, and it’s one you could tackle by making dog food from scratch. It may seem like a lot of hassle, but it won’t be any worse than traipsing from one pet shop to the other. Even better, ensuring homemade food goes down a treat is as simple as focusing on these key ingredients.

Meat

Even fussy eaters would be hard pressed to turn their nose up to a good bit of cooked meat. This is where they get the bulk of their protein, and it’s also where flavor comes into play. Sadly, shop bought options don’t make use of this. They either use meat no one would recognize or compact it into unappealing hard squares. Cooking up fresh meat, then, could be all it takes to break that eating barrier.

Fresh veggies

A plain plate of meat isn’t going to provide all the nutrients your pup needs. If in doubt about this, contact a vet to learn more about dietary requirements. For the most part, though, bulking meals with veg will ensure your dog stays healthy. It’ll also take you a long way in flavor stakes. Options such as carrots, peas, and even broccoli feature in most shop bought foods. And, they should make an appearance in your homemade options. What dog could resist that beautiful splash of color?

Fat

Last, you need to hold food together, and fat is the ideal way to do it. Meat fat is your best bet, though vegetable oils and such can work as well. The key to remember is that fat may sound bad, but it’s crucial for your dog’s health. It also adds an irresistible flavor even a Yorkie would have a hard time saying no to.

So, those are your staples. By mixing up these three key features, you can create a new recipe every day. That variety, along with the flavors on offer, could make fussy eating a thing of your dog’s past.

Cats need certain nutrients to stay healthy. Cat owners should follow the recommendations of cat associations and their veterinarians advice when choosing a proper food product for their feline. Veterinarian colleges have wonderful studies on cat’s nutritional needs for optimum health. Like their forebears, domestic cats should ingest mostly animal products since cats are considered carnivores. They should not have a lot of fat or unnecessary additives in their regular diets. It is recommended that cats get their nutritional needs met by their diet, as giving cats supplements at home can be dangerous. Cat owners should buy cat food recommended by their local vets.

Cats need lots of exercise to stay lean and fit. There are some easy-to-use cat toy recommendations from vets that encourage cat activity and cat-owner bonding. Give your cats safe toys that a vet has approved. Sometimes the simplest cat toys get the most beneficial result. Fishing toys encourage pouncing and is a fun game for owners to play with their beloved feline. Other great toys are those that keep a cat occupied, stimulating their brains while encouraging movement. Some owners like the laser beams for cats. It is important to follow safety tips when using. Never shine the beams directly into either human or cat eyes. This play option allows an owner to shine the beam on something farther away, so cats have to run farther distances.

Many cat owners are sold on using cat treats. Their cats just love getting these tasty tidbits. It is critical to only use vet approved treats, since many store bought cat treats have too many unsafe or unhealthy additives. It is a good idea to shop where a veterinarian would approve of. This ensures that the cat treats will be of recommended standards. Also, ask your veterinarian for advice on how often to give your cats treats. Even healthy treats can be detrimental if the cat is given too much. With your vets instructions, a cat owner cans search the online vet approved cat stores to find the perfect cat treat brand.

There are certain medications for cats that are better obtained through your veterinarian or by visiting a store online that sells the medicines that are the same as can be gotten from the vet’s office. Buying online can save customers money. Plus, this shopping method is much more convenient. Always have your cat checked by your vet if the cat seems ill or the cat’s condition changes.

When cat owners realize that they can buy cat food online that rivals what the vet’s office recommends, they are amazed. They can also order cat treats, medicine and toys. Online shopping for premium cat products saves money.

It’s always a hard time when your beloved pooch isn’t being themselves. After all, our dog can’t tell us what’s wrong. Therefore, it can be challenging to pinpoint what is wrong with the pet. In fact, it typically ends up with us taking the dog to the vet to find out what’s occurring. However, if you look out for signs, you might be able to figure out what’s happening without even going to the vet. Therefore, here are some signs your pooch is under the weather.

They are not eating anything at all

If your dog is anything like mine, it will cry for food when it’s dinner time. And then gobble it down quickly to appease their appetite. Therefore, it can be a cause for concern if your dog stops eating their dinner. It might be a bad stomach which has stopped them fancying their food. And thankfully like our stomach bugs, it tends to go after 24 hours. However, if it’s longer than this timescale, you need to take them to the vet. After all, not eating could be down to a kidney or liver problem. Or they might have eaten something out of the ordinary which has now obstructed their stomach. And the vet might need to operate quickly to get them out of danger. Therefore, always keep an eye on your pet’s eating habits, so they stay happy and healthy!

They are constantly scratching their skin

It’s common for dogs to scratch their skin occasionally. After all, they might have picked up some dirt in their fur while they were outside and it’s bugging them. But if it’s becoming a constant thing, it’s a sign there is something else more serious going on. For one thing, it could be a sign that your pooch has got fleas or ticks on their body. And then you will have to quickly get treatment like frontline plus for dogs to ensure the fleas become a thing of the past. After all, the longer they stay on your pooch, the more chance your dog will end up with irritated skin. Not only that, but you could potentially end up with the fleas all around your house. Also, scratching their skin could be a sign of some form of infection. After all, they might have accidentally eaten something or come into contact with something which has irritated their skin. Therefore, check their skin thoroughly and go to the doctors for further action.

They are sleeping more than usual

Your dog is likely to sleep a lot in the day. After all, certain breeds do require a lot of sleep. And for other pets, they just love getting some rest! But if your dog is sleeping more than usual, there might be something else wrong. For one thing, they might be dehydrated and require more water to give them energy. The same goes for food; make sure they are eating plenty. Also, make sure it’s not dog depression. After all, more dogs than you realize suffer from this, and it can leave them sluggish. Therefore, do go see the doctor if you notice these signs.

And remember to take your pooch for an annual checkup. That way, the vet can spot quickly if something is wrong.
