How To Help A Loved One In The Hospital

Reviews · November 26, 2018

It can be a difficult time when you have a friend or family member in the hospital. In addition to the obvious health concerns, there will also be a tremendous amount of stress, anxiety and practical issues that make this a challenging time. It can be hard to know how to help someone when they are spending time in the hospital, especially if you find it difficult to visit them. A good friend will always be able to find ways to help no matter how big or small the gesture, and the following are just a few different ways that you will be able to help someone.

  1. Visiting

Obviously, one of the best things that you can do is to visit the person when you are allowed (but always check ahead before visiting). You should spend this time listening to their concerns and making sure that they are well cared for, but they may also want to take their mind off of their health issues so do not shy away from talking about yourself or what is happening outside of the hospital. Bring gifts, such as:

  • Their favorite flowers
  • Books, magazines and newspapers
  • Any hobby-related gifts that they can do in the hospital such as knitting
  • Spa treatments
  1. Handling Matters At Home

The person in the hospital should be focused purely on their own health and not have to worry about their life outside the hospital. This means that it can be of great help to handle aspects such as notifying their employer and keeping them up to date, picking the kids up from school and looking after them, feeding pets, watering plants, keeping in touch with friends and family, etc. Be sure to ask them if there is anything that you can do to help when you visit.

  1. Make Sure They Are Getting Proper Care

Most hospitals have excellent levels of care, but they are not infallible, and mistakes can easily be made. It can be difficult when you are a patient and unwell, which is why a good friend needs to make sure that they are getting the care that they need and that there has been no negligence. If there have been mistakes or a lack of care that lead to injuries, then you can make an injuries claim, and they could receive compensation. Making sure that they are getting proper care will involve attending appointments with them, keeping a running log of medication, meals, and checkups.

  1. Plan For Their Return

A great friend will also think about ways that they can help when the person is discharged. This might involve picking them up from the hospital, tidying the home and preparing it for their recovery, picking up groceries and offering to help with their daily chores until they are back on their feet. Other ways to help them include:

  • Stocking up the fridge for them
  • Moving furniture (if they agree to it) so that everything is within reach
  • Preparing the bedroom
  • Helping them settle in

Nobody likes to spend time in the hospital, and it can be upsetting to see a loved one having to spend time there. These are a few ideas for how you can help your friend during their time of need and help to reduce stress so that they can focus on getting better.

World-Class Healthcare While Seeing The World

Reviews · May 22, 2018

If you love to travel, then you are likely already aware that healthcare systems are different all around the world, and they are not always compatible with the care we receive from home. From the way that costs are calculated to how prescriptions are issued can change from country to country and not having a continuity of care services can make things all the more confusing. Here, we’re going to look at how you ensure you take care of yourself and manage your expectations of care, so you are always getting the same or similar kind of treatment you expect no matter where you are.

Picture

Being left out of supply

If you have a chronic illness like diabetes, heart disease, or something else then you are likely used to have your prescription meds with you wherever you go. Indeed, you can take your pills overseas with you to keep managing your condition in the way that you’re used to. Figure out how long you are going for and make sure you have enough of a supply to last the whole trip. Just make sure that you have a signed letter from your doctor explaining your prescription. It should be no surprise that airport security can be skeptical of people bringing drugs on a plane, but the letter should be enough to convince any.

The hospital visit

If you are injured or you get ill overseas, you might be concerned as to how you’re going to deal with the medical bills. Travel insurance can help you cover it but there’s a good chance that the cover you’re already on could do the same at a lower cost to you. In particular, if you’re on Medicare, Medigap plans C, D, F, G, M and N all cover travel emergency health. Compare supplement plans, which can help you save on many costs at home as well as overseas. Otherwise, you may well find yourself paying out of pocket for any treatments.

The local baddies

It’s a good idea to do your own research on local health risks when traveling abroad. You can get nasty bugs from drinking water or eating street food in the wrong places. Most concerning of all, however, will the viruses you might contract overseas. Even if they’re not extremely common, you can never tell when outbreaks of diseases like Yellow Fever can strike in a country that has the mosquitoes that carry it. Check out the list of vaccines you should organize before taking any trip abroad. Most vaccines are relatively cheap and the costs treatment against some of these diseases can be huge and ongoing. It’s not worth taking the risk of going without.

You can ensure that your insurance covers you, that your prescriptions work the same, and that you avoid the most dangerous of diseases you might catch overseas. If you need treatment across the pond, how you receive it may change depending on where you are, but you can ensure it all fits the pricing model you’re familiar with.

Pittsburgh Is The Place To Live

Reviews · February 21, 2018

When you are looking for a city to live to be your home, There are several things to consider. Do you want a city known for it’s nightlife or do you want a city known for it’s education possibilities or a city known for it’s medical properties? Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is a city that has it all.

I for one know what it is like to live and grow up in other cities as my fathers job caused us to move every 4 to 5 years. Some of the places were o.k. and some were not. It was not until we moved to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania that I felt like I was finally home. I thank my lucky stars that Pittsburgh was the last place we moved to. The perfect place to grow up, Raise a family and go to school. Be it high school or post education, This is where I found my career path in the medical field. Pittsburgh was also the place where I found my soul mate. Eric is one of the most decent and easy going person I know and also my best friend.

Pittsburgh has some of the best post education resources in the U.S.A.. Being home to Carnegie Melon, Duquesne University and even Chatham University- Education is at the forefront for people seeking higher education. Students come from around the world to attend these places for their higher education and research grants.

Singles as well as families are flocking to Pittsburgh as we do have it  all. With Pittsburgh being made up of small communities, There is something for everyone to do to either meet people or do the South Side Crawl. Yes, the younger generation still bar hops. If bars are not your thing, Then I would suggest other activities such as bowling, Ice skating or even a cooking class to meet that special someone or just make new friends. You will not find a friendlier city than Pittsburgh. Making friends has always came easy to me as I love learning about people and what makes them tick. I guess you could say that is why I became a Nurse.

One of my personal favorite things I love about Pittsburgh are the medical advances that this region has discovered. Pittsburgh is known for it’s medical hospitals where most hospitals have a specialty. Being a Nurse for 25 years, I have had the pleasure of working in quite a few of them. I really wanted to be a Legal Nurse Consultant working with Pittsburgh medical malpractice lawyers for example. Mistakes happen and I hope you would never need one but if you do, They are here to help. The Nursing field is constantly evolving as there is do much learn. I think learning is in my blood as my father was working on his Doctorate in history when he passed away.

In closing, I hope you will take away some of the positive points that living in Pittsburgh can offer and come and visit our great city to see exactly what I mean.
