Rainfall is an interesting phenomenon. People often take it for granted, and sometimes it seems very simplistic. However, rain, and the storms that sometimes accompany it, are very complex, and specific storm tracker software exists that can help analyze these storm systems. There are characteristics of rain that you may not be aware of. Below are some of these examples of lesser-known facts.

  1. Disappearing Moisture

It is possible for rain to fall from the sky but never hit the ground. In some areas where the weather is extremely dry and hot, the moisture can evaporate before it touches down, which can cause plant life to suffer.

  1. Some Rain Isn’t Water

Rain is usually associated with water since that is what people know. However, on some other moons and planets, there have been instances of rain being made up of different elements, such as sulfuric acid.

  1. Speedy Drops

Raindrops fall at a speed of anywhere from 18 to 22 miles per hour. They would actually fall much quicker, but the atmospheric conditions cause friction with the water, and that slows it down to this speed.

  1. It Can Bring Lightning

There is often a correlation between the amount of rain and the amount of lightning. The reason is that lightning most often forms in clouds. There are lightning detection systems for use during thunderstorms.

  1. It Is Odorless

Oftentimes there is a certain smell when it rains. The interesting thing is that the smell you notice is not actually the rain itself. There is a substance from the rain that combines with plant oils in the soil, and that is what creates that “rain smell.”

Understanding Rainfall and Weather

Rainfall is a very mighty force of nature, one that allows the earth to exist. There are many aspects of it that can be analyzed with storm tracker software. Find out more about these tools that can give you further insight.
