copy of the book “A Candle for My Mother”

Author: Pamela Newton
About the Book:

A Candle for My Mother is an inspirational story of a young woman from the Midwest, Lorraine Newton, who longed to travel the world despite being the mother of four young children. “I’m going to see places, come hell or high water!” Lorraine remarked, and she made it happen.

Lorraine’s stories in the book are told in her own words from tape recordings she made before she died, and letters saved by a friend, detailing Lorraine’s family’s amazing experiences in Iraq and travels in Europe. Into the bubbling political cauldron of the Middle East in the 1950s ventured an American family. Iraq was not necessarily what Lorraine had in mind, but the country fit exotic to a tee. It conjured up “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” markets filled with silks and gold, and travel in Europe on vacations. Lorraine was about to embark on a grand adventure.

Pamela Newton never felt closer to her mom than when she was traveling, sometimes logging over 100,000 miles a year: “Mom’s adventurous spirit was with me on every trip, in every country, encouraging me to make the most of each moment.” The things that Pamela experienced on her business trips often triggered a remembrance of her mother and her childhood. Those memories became the reflections and gratitude’s that Pamela expresses at the end of each chapter when visiting churches across the globe to light candles for her mother, a tradition she began in Westminster Abbey.

For readers who may be reminded of exciting memories from their childhood, A Candle for My Mother has been designed with pages interspersed throughout for writing personal reflections. Here a son or daughter can add their favorite pictures, recount “Best Day Ever” times, write a thank you to their mom, or include poems, musings, or thoughts. It is designed to be a gift to oneself or one’s mom. Read it, write in it and then give it to your mother…with gratitude.

Your Spare Room Styling Guide

Reviews · December 21, 2017

If you have a spare room and you’re not quite sure what to do with it, you’ve come to the right place. Your spare room can be a great place for guests to stay over, or even somewhere your kids can spend time with their friends.  SHABBY CHIC FURNITURE is a great place to start if you are looking for somewhere that offers affordable yet great quality furniture. Here are some ideas for styling your spare room that you’ll love!

Brighten It Up

A spare room doesn’t have to be boring just because you’re not in there all the time! You might not want to spend as much money on it as you have on the rest of the house, but you can still give it a little personality. Neon accents can look great on bedding or on the wall, but don’t use too many as they can be too stimulating and keep your guests awake. They stand out well against a neutral decor, so you can still give the room a serene, peaceful look as well as personality.

Geometric prints go great with pretty much anything, and can add interest to an otherwise boring and plain space.

Getting The Temperature Right With Layers

Everybody is different, so getting the temperature right in your spare room can be tough. You might think it’s nice a cosy, but your guest could be one of those people who is ‘always cold’ and finds it a little too nippy. To make sure the temperature is right for them, it’s a good idea to layer the bed up with plenty of pillows and throws. This means your guest can better control how warm or cool they are while they sleep, and can also make the room look far more stylish. A dressed bed is a must in any bedroom!

A Sofabed Is Sofabad – Choose A Real Bed

We all know that sleeping on a sofa bed can be torture. Why would you want that for your guests? They’d probably rather sleep on the sofa than on a tiny sofa bed that’s squeaky and pokes them in all of the wrong places. You can still find cheap mattresses that are high quality, so don’t worry about spending too much on the guest room. You just want something that will help your guests to wake up feeling refreshed, rather than achy and tired.

Guest Entertainment

Just because your guests have gone to bed doesn’t mean they’ll sleep right away. It’s only polite to leave them something to keep them entertained if they can’t sleep. Consider including a book shelf with some great books on there, or a small TV that they can put on if they’re feeling restless. You don’t want them to lie awake all night in the dark and resent you for it the next day!

Make sure that any electricals in the room can easily be turned off so as not to disrupt your guest’s sleeping pattern. You don’t want any pesky little lights getting in the way and keeping them up. Do include a nice lamp for your guests to use too, just incase they do choose to read.

Profitable Ways to Spend Time Online

Reviews · May 19, 2017

If you’re anything like me, you probably spend a lot of time online. Tweeting celebrities, checking Facebook, and killing time playing games are all common ways of using the internet, and they might provide us with lots of entertainment, but are they really the best ways for us to spend our time online? Probably not.

You see, the internet has provided us all with unparalleled opportunities to make money online and improve our lives. Here are just a handful of the most profitable ways to spend time online:

Write a Blog

Instead of spending all your time online browsing other people’s blogs, why not divert some of your spare time to creating your own blog. You can have a blog up and running within a matter of hours, and if you take it seriously, dedicate a few hours a week to writing and build up and audience, you could make a full-time income from your new hobby.

Enter Sweepstakes

Browsing websites like http://www.sweepstakesdaily.com is a great alternative to spending your spare time checking Facebook because they collect together all of the best contests on the web for you to enter. Even if you spend only a few minutes each day looking through and applying to a fraction of the sweepstakes available, there is a good chance that you will get lucky at least occasionally, and win some great prizes. So great are the opportunities for turning a profit by entering sweepstakes that there is a small but growing group of people who treat competition entry as a full-time job and many of them do quite well out of it too!

Writing eBooks

If you’ve always wanted to become an author, but the thought of having to submit your work to publisher after publisher has put you o9ff, now might be the time to give it a go because self-publishing for the Kindle and other eBook platforms is really starting to take off.

Even if you don’t have the time or implication to write a 50,000-word novel, you could make a regular income by creating short instructive eBooks. You can find out more about self-publishing at http://www.copyblogger.com/professional-self-publishing/, and you should consider giving it a try because it’s a great way to create passive income.

Create a Course

If you have a particular skill that you think other people might want to learn, creating a video course and publishing it on Coursera, Udemy or Craftsy could be a great way to use the internet to your benefit, So, instead of idly passing the time discussing your hobby on your favorite forum, start writing and recording tutorials and make some extra money.

Set Up a Store

Instead of whiling away the hours trawling Etsy or browsing Amazon for bargains, start making the internet work for you by setting up your own online store on one of the most popular platforms. It’ll take some hard work, but with a little determination, you could start making hundreds of dollars per month just in your spare time.

Are you making money online? Which methods do you use to bring the money in?
